Access to fresh, healthy food is as integral to good health as access to insurance. Through grants from the California Association of Food Banks and LA Care Community Benefits, Maternal and Child Health Access has been able to partner with Los Angeles County Department of Social Services (DPSS) to become a CalFresh Outreach site, in Downtown LA, at our site at the Wellness Center at the Historic General Hospital and at health fairs and other community activities. As such, we are able to assist clients in filling out a CalFresh Program application; make sure that all of the supporting documentation is complete, upload the applications directly to our partner district at DPSS, and follow through with any needed advocacy. We are proud to report that applicants through our outreach program have 94% approval rate (compared to a 50% statewide approval rate)..
CHANGES TO THE FOOD STAMP PROGRAM:
- The State of California has changed the name of the Food Stamps Program to CalFresh. On the federal level the program is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- Another significant change is that resources, that is: money in the bank, cars, property, are no longer counted for CalFresh program eligibility if there are children under the age of 18 in the household
