As part
of
our

management
and
health
education
program,
MCHA
sponsors
an
economic
development
project,
Colectiva
Mujeres
en
Movimiento
(Women
in
Action),
an
arts
and
arts
and
crafts
collective.
Begun in
1999, the
Colectiva
provides
low-income
women with
a source
for supplemental
income
(the women
keep 80-100%
of what
they sell
and sometimes
20% is
kept by
the Colectiva
for the
purchase
of supplies),
and the
opportunity
to design,
create,
and preserve
traditional
folk arts
from their
native
lands.
The Colectiva
encourages
participants
to nourish
their cultural
roots and
also provides
a place
where they
can increase
their self-esteem
and confidence
through
the information and education
theyreceive
during
meetings,
and their
sharing
of folk
art skills
they have
brought
from their
countries
of origin.
